Installing Acronis Backup and Security without the antivirus and firewall parts.

Complete instructions on how to install "Acronis Backup and Security 2010" bundle without the anti-virus and firewall components: leaving only the "Acronis True Image Home 2010" component.

Note: it is not technically possible install only the ATI part. You must install the whole deal and then uninstall the ABS2010 part.

After fighting with this software for almost three solid days, I have come to the conclusion that it is not really worth the trouble. It has also been made clear to me that once the license term of the Backup and Security 2010 product comes to an end that the True Image Home 2010 will cease to be fully functional. It will continue to restore backups but will not make new backups until you renew your subscription. However, I went to a lot of trouble to figure out this procedure and I figure it might be useful for someone so I am posting it.

1. Back up any settings and or configuration files for your current anti-virus and firewall software as appropriate, because you will be completely uninstalling these at least temporarily. How you do this depends on your software. Usually, people don't save and restore these things. However, if you have done a lot of configuring, you may want to write down the info or perhaps save some registry entries. Ask the vendor or other users of that software for help if necessary.
2. Disconnect your computer from the internet. You are about to uninstall your security software so you don't want to leave your computer vulnerable.
3. Completely uninstall your anti-virus and firewall software. Though this is only temporary, I highly recommend completely uninstalling these. I tried just "disabling" the software and even setting it to not start when Windows boots. However, Acronis Backup and Security 2010 would not install properly until I completely uninstalled my other security software. (The software I was using was Zone Alarm Extreme Security. Your mileage may vary with other software.)
4. If you have any copies of Acronis Backup and Security or True Image installed on your computer, you should probably uninstall them too.
5. Reboot your computer. Just to be extra thorough.
6. Install the full "Acronis Backup and Security 2010" bundle. There is no option to do anything else. You will end up with three icons on the desktop. One for the security part of the bundle, labeled "Acronis Backup and Security 2010" and two for the backup part labeled "Acronis One-Click Backup" and "Acronis True Image Home 2010."
7. Reboot your computer.
8. Open the Acronis True Image Home 2010 part of the bundle via its separate desktop icon.
   • Go straight to the Options dialog {Tools and Utilities / Options / Virus Scan} and turn off the anti-virus scan function as illustrated in the diagram provided in the forum post by Anton at Acronis located here: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/8544#comment-23044.
   • You must do this before attempting to uninstall the security part of the bundle because the "Virus Scan" option is only available when the security part is still installed. Once you uninstall the security part in subsequent steps, then this option will no longer be available.
   • Now, here is the kicker: Even though the "Virus Scan" option is not visible after uninstalling the security part, the settings still get applied. This will be true for any stored backup "profiles" you may have as well. In addition, it seems as if the default setting is to have "Virus Scan" option turned on. Therefore, if you intend to use any old backup profiles, I recommend that you edit each and every one of them and make darned sure that the Virus Scan option is turned off for them as well. Remember, the {Tools and Utilities / Options / Virus Scan } setting is just the default for any new backup profiles created. It does not change any existing profiles.
   • Close Acronis True Image Home 2010.
9. Uninstall the security part of the bundle:
   • { Control Panel ; Add or Remove Programs ; Acronis Backup and Security 2010 ; [Remove] }
   • You will notice that there is a separate entry in the Add or Remove Programs list for Acronis True Image Home 2010.
10. Reboot your computer.
11. Reinstall your previous anti-virus and firewall software.

You should now be able to create and run backups without Acronis True Image 2010 attempting to fire up the anti-virus part of the bundle.

Please note that this post makes no comment as to the suitability of the Acronis anti-virus or firewall software. It is merely a list of steps to accomplish a goal. It is up to the individual user to determine whether they want to use the anti-virus and firewall that come with the Acronis Backup and Security 2010 bundle or to use other software which they may prefer.
